Orchids: you either love or hate them. Some plant parents think they are the bane of their existence, while others have been able to crack the code with seamless orchid care. With these tips, we will walk you through easy orchid care tips. In addition, we will also describe how to rebloom an orchid, reviving it back to its healthiest condition.
Reblooming an Orchid
As their flowers fade, it can be tempting to throw your plants away. Know that just because an orchid does not have flowers, this does NOT mean your orchid is dead or beyond help. With a few simple tricks, it is possible to let your orchids bloom not just for a few months at a time, but for many years.
Temperature
Some plants are genetically programmed to start growing after it feels cold outside. When temperatures dip and rise back up, this signals to a plant, “Winter must be over. Now, let’s move out of dormancy and start growing for spring!” Regardless of season, we can use this trick to our advantage. This process is integral in orchid care and reblooming.
Simulate winter and encourage a slight drop in temperature. At night, move your orchid to a place that is cooler than usual, about 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. This should send a signal to your orchid that it is time to jumpstart growth!
Fertilizer
One reason your orchid has not bloomed yet may be because it does not have the energy to. Orchid blooms require lots of supplemental nutrients to fuel new flowers. We recommend fertilizing during spring and summer, using a commercial orchid fertilizer such as this liquid orchid fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the label to make sure you do not over-fertilize, as this leads to much more harm than good.
Covering Roots
When your orchid is ready to bloom again, you should see what looks like roots sprouting in the medium. Ensure that the roots have plenty of space in their pot when caring for any orchid or potted plant.
Orchids do not grow in the same soil than other tropical plants do. Purchase enough orchid bark, sphagnum moss, or specialty orchid mix to make sure all the roots are covered.
A little patience goes a long way. Trust the process and know that orchids rebloom at their own pace. Continue to pay attention to inputs such as water, light, fertilizer, and soil. With the right combination of simple and easy orchid care at the right pace for each plant, your orchids will appreciate all that you are doing to take care of them and reward you with blooms over and over again!
